Several years ago Amy Turner, member of the Jasper/Marion county Pony Express came up with the idea of holding benefit horse shows with a Cowgirl Queen Contest, to help raise money to benefit Easter Seals Camp Sunnyside. The first show of this type was held at Amy’s family’s indoor facility because it absolutely poured down rain, but it didn’t damper the spirit of all participating. Amy won the JR. class and was the first Pony Express Queen to show at the Iowa State Fair. Well, the idea grew by leaps & bounds, soon several counties wanted to hold similar shows, so the Jasper/Marion county volunteers assisted, lending their experience as well as hours of manpower. In 2011, there were 12 Pony Express Queens representing 6 counties in Iowa at the Iowa State Fair, and we are so fortunate for the wonderful exposure this gives our organization, and also the thousands of dollars these young ladies and their friends & families help raise for Pony Express and Camp Sunnyside!
The photo shows several of these young ladies present to receive the “Stub & Vi Johnson, Volunteer Group of the Year Award” at the recent Easter Seals 85th Annual Meeting & Awards Presentation.
